The DEA¹ (United States Drug Enforcement Administration) reports that the diversion of legitimate pharmaceuticals is a significant problem in Illinois. The problem of purchasing pharmaceuticals over the Internet has grown dramatically. Ritalin®, a controversial drug prescribed for attention deficit disorder in children, may be gaining popularity as a recreational drug for teenagers. The most commonly diverted pharmaceutical drugs continue to be those containing hydrocordone, alprazolam, and phentermine. There has also been an increase in the abuse of diazepam (valium®), especially 10 mg strength tablets. There has been a notable rise in the number of reported incidents of diversion of pseudoephedrine and, as a result, the number of investigations in this area is on the rise. There has been an increase in diversion of Canadian manufactured pseudoephedrine products being smuggled into the US, as opposed to domestically manufactured products being diverted from the regulated distribution chain. OxyContin® remains a highly abused substance in the state. With increased media attention on OxyContin® there has been a shift to an increased use and abuse of methadone.

Pharmaceutical Diversion: Current investigations indicate that diversion of hydrocodone products such as Vicodin®, oxycodone products such as OxyContin®, and pseudoephedrine continues to be a problem in Illinois. Primary methods of diversion being reported are illegal sale and distribution by health care professionals and workers, “doctor shopping” (going to a number of doctors to obtain prescriptions for a controlled pharmaceutical). Benzodiazepines (such as alprazolam), methylphenidate, and methadone were also identified as being among the most commonly abused and diverted pharmaceuticals in Illinois.

OxyContin Abuse News did a story in February 2002, stating that "Kentucky is among 15 states to have a prescription drug-monitoring program, with half a dozen other states considering them and advocates pushing for a national system to link the sate databases. Congress proved $2 million for this year to start prescription drug monitoring systems but advocates feel that is not good enough. The Supreme Court ruled in 1977 that state officials could track prescriptions as long as the information is kept private. Included in the 15 states that now have tacking programs are California, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, and Washington."²

Just in the state of Illinois, there are many different types of drug rehab and treatment facilities. The addict needs a reliable proven program where when they are done, their drug addiction is a thing of the past and they are now able to live full productive lives free of the stronghold of drugs or alcohol.
