The DEA¹ (United States Drug Enforcement Administration) reports that Hydrocodone was the most abused pharmaceutical drug in 2005. Other drugs commonly diverted and abused were Oxycontin and Vicodin. The average age of a first time user of an opiate drug is between 15 and 22. Alabama created a law to assist in curbing "doctor shopping" by implementing a Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP). Pharmaceuticals are transported into Alabama mostly by private vehicle. These drugs are also obtained through forged prescriptions and “doctor shopping.” An increasing problem is the obtaining of pharmaceutical drugs via the internet.

In an article published in the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners (Vol 16, No. 2 Spring 2001)², the board stated "...some area pharmacies have posted window signs announcing that they no longer stock OxyContin, and some doctors have decided to no longer prescribe the drug (“Doctors stop prescribing OxyContin,” Birmingham News, April 2, 2001 - Abuse of the painkiller OxyContin has taken almost a dozen lives in Alabama; now some doctors are taking a stand against abusers).

The United States GAO (General Accounting Office) states in a published Prescription Drugs report entitled, "OxyContin Abuse and Diversion and Efforts to Address the Problem, "Several factors may have contributed to the abuse and diversion of OxyContin. The active ingredient in OxyContin is twice as potent as morphine, which may have made it an attractive target for misuse. Further, the original label’s safety warning advising patients not to crush the tablets because of the possible rapid release of a potentially toxic amount of oxycodone may have inadvertently alerted abusers to methods for abuse. Moreover, the significant increase in OxyContin’s availability in the
marketplace may have increased opportunities to obtain the drug illicitly in some states. Finally, the history of abuse and diversion of prescription drugs, including opioids, in some states may have predisposed certain areas to problems with OxyContin."³

Just in the state of Alabama, there are many different types of drug rehab and treatment facilities. The addict needs a reliable proven program where when they are done, their drug addiction is a thing of the past and they are now able to live full productive lives free of the stronghold of drugs or alcohol.
